California TESOL (CATESOL) 2013 Plenary Presentation: Riding the Waves of Online Teaching & Learning

California TESOL (CATESOL) 2013 Plenary Presentation: Riding the Waves of Online Teaching & Learning
CATEGORY:  Speaking Schedule  |  WHEN:  26.10.2013 - 26.10.2013 08.30 h - 10.00 h

Trio of speakers: Mary Ann Christison, Denise Murray and David Nunan, all from Anaheim University

The theme for the 2013 CATESOL conference, "Riding the Waves of Success," provides an appropriate metaphor for online learning. In order to ride a wave successfully, one must be able to negotiate its crests and troughs and anticipate both wave frequency and wave periods. Online learning has its own crests and troughs in the challenges and opportunities it affords both teachers and learners. Wave frequency and the wave period can be thought of metaphorically as instructional spacing for online instruction--how much material should be included in online instruction and how long will it take L2 learners to achieve their learning goals. Like online learning waves are also influenced by context. In the case of waves, context includes a rocky shoreline or the stability of the air current. For online learning contextual factors include the learning management system (LMS), the telephone, handheld devices, the web browser, and the computer.

In this plenary, the presenters will explore these metaphorical images from the position of 1) the research--what is available, how is it being used, who is teaching, what models are available; 2) instructional design--what factors should be considered, how should learning be monitored and evaluated; and 3) examples of online learning in action.
